Mont Saint-Michel Private Tour from Nantes

A big day, well planned, with your own driver or licensed driver-guide. Or two days, if you have the time.

FROM NANTES TO MONT SAINT-MICHEL, WITHOUT THE STRESS

Mont Saint-Michel reflected in the still water of the bay
  • Full Day / 10 hours
  • Private Tour (1-7 people)
  • From Nantes

Let us be honest from the start: Mont Saint-Michel from Nantes is a big day. It takes about 2 hours 30 each way when the traffic is flowing, and the road passes two large cities, Nantes and Rennes, where rush hour can change everything. This is why we plan it as a 10-hour day from the start, instead of promising something shorter and rushing you around the abbey.

Done properly, it is well worth it. Someone else handles the traffic, the parking and the timing, while you sit back and watch Brittany go by. And if you can spare a night, the trip becomes something else entirely: you sleep near the Mont, then come home through Cancale, Saint-Malo, Dinan or Rennes.

Two Ways to Spend the Day

Option A: English-Speaking Driver

You visit on your own. Your driver takes you door to door, handles the parking, shows you how the island works when you arrive, and meets you again at the time you choose. Ideal if you like to wander without a schedule. For the stories behind the stones, ask us about our PDF guide to the Mont, written by our guides. You can also rent an audio guide at the abbey.

Option B: Licensed Driver-Guide

One person drives and guides you. You visit the abbey together with skip-the-line tickets included, and the history of the Mont comes alive along the way. The best choice for a first visit.

What's Included

  • Private transport from your hotel or address in Nantes, in a Mercedes V-Class or similar
  • Fuel, tolls, parking and the shuttle to the island
  • Your driver (Option A) or licensed driver-guide (Option B)
  • Skip-the-line abbey tickets with Option B
  • Lunch suggestions to suit your tastes and the season

How the Day Works

Plan on about 10 hours in total: about 5 hours on the road and about 5 hours on site. We set the exact times with you, depending on the season, the tides and the traffic.

  • Morning

    Leave Nantes

We collect you from your hotel or address in Nantes and set the departure time with you, taking the rush hour around Nantes and Rennes into account.

  • 2 hours 30

    The road north

About 2 hours 30 when the traffic is flowing, past Rennes and on to the bay.

  • On site

    Mont Saint-Michel

Time for the abbey, the village, the ramparts and lunch. With a driver-guide, you visit the abbey together on skip-the-line tickets. With a driver, you explore at your own pace and meet again at the agreed time.

  • Evening

    Back to Nantes

The same road home, about 2 hours 30 again, timed as well as we can to miss the evening traffic.

Lunch, Your Way

  • Local mussels, in season from June to November
  • Pré-salé lamb, raised on the salt meadows of the bay
  • A picnic in nature, with a view over the bay

Two Days Instead of One

If you have the time, you can sleep near the Mont and head back to Nantes the next day, with time to discover more of Brittany on the way. You also get to see the bay in the evening or early morning, once the day visitors have gone. For a taste of what that feels like, read about my night alone in the bay.

On Your Second Day

Cancale

The oyster capital of Brittany, on the far side of the bay.

Saint-Malo

The walled city of the corsairs, with its ramparts above the sea.

Dinan

Half-timbered houses, medieval ramparts and a port on the Rance.

Rennes

The capital of Brittany, right on your way back to Nantes.

Tell us when you enquire and we will quote it as a two-day tour, with a second day that fits your pace.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

PLANNING YOUR TRIP FROM NANTES

About 2 hours 30 each way when the traffic is flowing. Nantes and Rennes are both big cities, so the roads around them get busy at rush hour, and that can add time. This is why we plan this tour as a 10-hour day from the start.

It is a big day, and we would rather tell you now. It is very doable with a private vehicle, but about 5 of the 10 hours are spent on the road. If you can spare a night, two days are worth considering: you see more and the drive is split up.

On a single day from Nantes, we do not recommend it. Villedieu-les-Poêles and Avranches work well on shorter routes, but from Nantes they would take too much time away from the Mont. If you want to see more, the two-day option is the better choice.

With a licensed driver-guide, yes, with skip-the-line access. With a driver, you visit on your own, and we can add tickets to your booking on request. The abbey is optional either way: it involves several hundred steps, and some guests prefer the village, the ramparts and the views over the bay.

You spend the first day at the Mont and sleep nearby, then come back to Nantes the next day by way of Cancale, Saint-Malo, Dinan or Rennes. It is quoted as a two-day tour. Tell us what you would like to see, and we will tell you what fits comfortably into your second day.

It depends on your tastes and on the season. Local mussels are served from June to November, and pré-salé lamb from the salt meadows is the great specialty of the bay. If you would rather eat outdoors, you can also picnic in nature with a view over the bay.

Partly. The main street is steep and cobbled, and the abbey has many stairs. Let us know when you enquire and we will plan a day that suits you, focusing on the lower village and the views over the bay.

Before you book

No two days are the same. Here is where prices start, what moves them, and what is worth knowing before you book.

How much does the Mont Saint-Michel private tour from Nantes cost?
Half-day tours start from €650 and full-day tours from €900, per vehicle for the whole group of 1 to 7 passengers, never per person. Most quotes come in above these figures, depending on your group size, the season (April to October is peak), where we collect you and where we drop you off, and whether you book an English-speaking driver or a certified driver-guide. Send us your dates and those details and we confirm an exact, all-inclusive figure before you commit. The price we quote is the price you pay, with nothing added afterwards.
Is this tour priced per person or per vehicle?
Per vehicle, for the whole group, never per person. One quoted price covers 1 to 7 passengers in a Mercedes V-Class or similar. A couple and a family of six pay the same for the same day, which means the cost per traveller drops sharply as your group grows.
What is the difference between a private driver and a driver-guide, and does it change the price?
In France these are two separate professions, and yes, it changes the price. A private driver holds a professional transport licence and handles transport, logistics and local advice, but is not legally permitted to give guided commentary inside monuments on a tour sold to you. A driver-guide holds both that licence and the national guide-conferencier card, and both drives you and guides you. A driver-guide costs more than a driver alone, and less than hiring a driver and a separate guide, which is a third option, the most expensive, and worth it for larger groups or tightly scheduled days.
Are the driving times on this page reliable?
They are the times we count on in ordinary conditions, and they hold for most of the year. They do not hold in July and August, over the May bank holidays, or during French school holidays: the roads through Normandy and Brittany fill up, coaches queue at the popular sites, and everything takes longer, sometimes noticeably. We plan for that rather than hope around it, starting earlier where it matters and reordering stops so you are not arriving somewhere at its worst hour. If your dates fall in a busy period we will tell you when we quote, not on the morning.
How much luggage can you carry?
As a rule, one suitcase per passenger. A full vehicle, seven passengers with seven large cases and seven cabin bags, will not fit, and that is not something we can solve on the morning. It is also common for two travellers to arrive with four to six pieces between them, which needs a larger van. So tell us how many bags you are bringing, and roughly what size, when you request your quote: we confirm the right vehicle, or arrange a second one, before you book. Luggage is the detail most often forgotten and the only one that cannot be improvised.
What is included, and what is not?
Included: private transport with your driver, your driver-guide, or a driver and a separate guide, whichever option you choose, plus fuel, tolls and parking. Entrance fees depend on the format you choose: with a certified driver-guide they are often included, the abbey at Mont Saint-Michel in particular, while with an English-speaking driver alone they are usually added. In every case your quote states in writing which fees are included and which are added, and if you would like them included you only have to ask. Meals and personal expenses are not included, so you stay free to choose. Anything added on the day is quoted before it happens, never after.
Will Belinda be my guide?
Most days, yes, I guide myself, and that is how I prefer to work. When my dates are already taken, or when your group needs a second vehicle, I hand you to a driver-guide or local driver I have worked with for years and chosen myself. I tell you who is coming with you as soon as I know, and always before the day itself. And if having me personally matters to you, say so when you enquire: I will tell you straight away whether your dates are free.
