Mont Saint-Michel Private Tour from Bayeux

From the town of the Tapestry to the abbey in the bay, a full day with your own driver or licensed driver-guide

FROM BAYEUX TO MONT SAINT-MICHEL, AT YOUR OWN PACE

Mont Saint-Michel illuminated at nightfall
  • Full Day / 8 hours
  • Private Tour (1-7 people)
  • From Bayeux

Most people staying in Bayeux have come for the D-Day beaches. Then they look at the map and see that Mont Saint-Michel is within reach for a day. It is, and without a coach timetable it makes a very good one: 1 hour 30 to 2 hours on the road each way, about four hours on the Mont, and home in time for dinner.

The two places have been linked for more than nine centuries. The Bayeux Tapestry itself shows William the Conqueror's army reaching the Mont and crossing the sands of the Couesnon, with Harold pulling men out of the quicksand. You can follow the same bay with your own eyes.

Two Ways to Spend the Day

Option A: English-Speaking Driver

You visit on your own. Your driver takes you door to door, handles the parking, shows you how the island works when you arrive, and meets you again at the time you choose. Ideal if you like to wander without a schedule. For the stories behind the stones, ask us about our PDF guide to the Mont, written by our guides. You can also rent an audio guide at the abbey.

Option B: Licensed Driver-Guide

One person drives and guides you. You visit the abbey together with skip-the-line tickets included, and the history of the Mont comes alive along the way. The best choice for a first visit.

What's Included

  • Private transport from your hotel or address in Bayeux, in a Mercedes V-Class or similar
  • Fuel, tolls, parking and the shuttle to the island
  • Your driver (Option A) or licensed driver-guide (Option B)
  • Skip-the-line abbey tickets with Option B

One Example of the Day

This is an example, not a fixed program. Your departure time depends on the season, the tides and what you want to do. Plan on about 8 hours in total: about 4 hours on the road and about 4 hours on site.

  • 9:00 AM

    Leave Bayeux

We collect you from your hotel or address in Bayeux. The drive takes between 1 hour 30 and 2 hours, depending on traffic.

  • 11:00 AM

    Arrive at Mont Saint-Michel

We take care of the parking and get you on the shuttle to the island. The Mont rises out of the bay long before you reach it, so keep your camera close for the last few miles.

  • 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM

    Four hours on the Mont

Time for the abbey, the village, the ramparts and lunch. With a driver-guide, you visit the abbey together on skip-the-line tickets. With a driver, you explore at your own pace and meet again at the agreed time.

  • 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM

    Back to Bayeux

We drive you back to your door, with the evening still ahead of you.

Stops Along the Way

If you have time for a longer day, two towns are worth a stop on this route. Each one adds hours to your day and to your quote.

Villedieu-les-Poêles

A town built on copper, with a long tradition of coppersmiths and a working foundry that has cast bells for Notre-Dame de Paris.

Avranches

Home to the Scriptorial, the museum of the medieval manuscripts of Mont Saint-Michel. Avranches was also the gateway of the American breakout in the summer of 1944, and has a monument to General Patton. If you were at Omaha Beach the day before, this is where the story goes next.

Lunch, Your Way

There is no set menu on this tour. Where you eat depends on what you like and when you come.

  • Local mussels, in season from June to November
  • Pré-salé lamb, raised on the salt meadows of the bay
  • A picnic in nature, with a view over the bay

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

PLANNING YOUR DAY FROM BAYEUX

Between 1 hour 30 and 2 hours each way, depending on traffic. That makes about 4 hours on the road in an 8-hour day, and leaves you about 4 hours on site.

Yes, if you are ready for a very long day, and we can organize it for you. If you like to take your time, we would rather not recommend it, as you would spend less time in each place. In that case, staying in Bayeux makes it easy to give each one its own day.

Yes. Villedieu-les-Poêles and Avranches both make a good stop. Each one lengthens the day, so we add the extra hours to your quote. Tell us when you enquire and we will plan the day around it.

With a licensed driver-guide, yes, with skip-the-line access. With a driver, you visit on your own, and we can add tickets to your booking on request. The abbey is optional either way: it involves several hundred steps, and some guests prefer the village, the ramparts and the views over the bay.

It depends on your tastes and on the season. Local mussels are served from June to November, and pré-salé lamb from the salt meadows is the great specialty of the bay. If you would rather eat outdoors, you can also picnic in nature with a view over the bay. Tell us what you like and we will suggest the right place for your day.

The bay looks completely different from one hour to the next, and on the very highest tides the causeway is briefly under water. We check the tide tables for your date and tell you what to expect.

Partly. The main street is steep and cobbled, and the abbey has many stairs. Let us know when you enquire and we will plan a day that suits you, focusing on the lower village and the views over the bay.

Before you book

No two days are the same. Here is where prices start, what moves them, and what is worth knowing before you book.

How much does the Mont Saint-Michel private tour from Bayeux cost?
Half-day tours start from €650 and full-day tours from €900, per vehicle for the whole group of 1 to 7 passengers, never per person. Most quotes come in above these figures, depending on your group size, the season (April to October is peak), where we collect you and where we drop you off, and whether you book an English-speaking driver or a certified driver-guide. Send us your dates and those details and we confirm an exact, all-inclusive figure before you commit. The price we quote is the price you pay, with nothing added afterwards.
Is this tour priced per person or per vehicle?
Per vehicle, for the whole group, never per person. One quoted price covers 1 to 7 passengers in a Mercedes V-Class or similar. A couple and a family of six pay the same for the same day, which means the cost per traveller drops sharply as your group grows.
What is the difference between a private driver and a driver-guide, and does it change the price?
In France these are two separate professions, and yes, it changes the price. A private driver holds a professional transport licence and handles transport, logistics and local advice, but is not legally permitted to give guided commentary inside monuments on a tour sold to you. A driver-guide holds both that licence and the national guide-conferencier card, and both drives you and guides you. A driver-guide costs more than a driver alone, and less than hiring a driver and a separate guide, which is a third option, the most expensive, and worth it for larger groups or tightly scheduled days.
Are the driving times on this page reliable?
They are the times we count on in ordinary conditions, and they hold for most of the year. They do not hold in July and August, over the May bank holidays, or during French school holidays: the roads through Normandy and Brittany fill up, coaches queue at the popular sites, and everything takes longer, sometimes noticeably. We plan for that rather than hope around it, starting earlier where it matters and reordering stops so you are not arriving somewhere at its worst hour. If your dates fall in a busy period we will tell you when we quote, not on the morning.
How much luggage can you carry?
As a rule, one suitcase per passenger. A full vehicle, seven passengers with seven large cases and seven cabin bags, will not fit, and that is not something we can solve on the morning. It is also common for two travellers to arrive with four to six pieces between them, which needs a larger van. So tell us how many bags you are bringing, and roughly what size, when you request your quote: we confirm the right vehicle, or arrange a second one, before you book. Luggage is the detail most often forgotten and the only one that cannot be improvised.
What is included, and what is not?
Included: private transport with your driver, your driver-guide, or a driver and a separate guide, whichever option you choose, plus fuel, tolls and parking. Entrance fees depend on the format you choose: with a certified driver-guide they are often included, the abbey at Mont Saint-Michel in particular, while with an English-speaking driver alone they are usually added. In every case your quote states in writing which fees are included and which are added, and if you would like them included you only have to ask. Meals and personal expenses are not included, so you stay free to choose. Anything added on the day is quoted before it happens, never after.
Will Belinda be my guide?
Most days, yes, I guide myself, and that is how I prefer to work. When my dates are already taken, or when your group needs a second vehicle, I hand you to a driver-guide or local driver I have worked with for years and chosen myself. I tell you who is coming with you as soon as I know, and always before the day itself. And if having me personally matters to you, say so when you enquire: I will tell you straight away whether your dates are free.
